National Adolescence Education Program (NAEP)

1st Session- 27 April 2007 (9:00 to 10:30 am)

 

Parents’ meeting was called and the parents were briefed about the importance and need of the adolescence education program. They were counseled to understand the needs of their children and bridge the gap between themselves and their adolescent children. The parents had put various questions about the ways to deal with their adolescents. Later, a movie was shown (by Proctor and Gamble) to the girls of classes VII and VIII about the beginning of menstrual cycle. They were also guided about the hygiene during menstruation. Myths related to menstruation were also clarified.

 

2nd Session- 13 July 2007 (12:30 to 1:30 pm)

 

A guest speaker, Prof. Malik, HOD, Deptt. Of Psychology, Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur, was invited to speak to the students. He discussed about the newly emerging problems during the adolescence, namely, lack of interest and lack of concentration in studies among the students. He also talked about the behavioral problems during adolescence. He gave many practical tips for learning effectively. His lecture was followed by a question-answer session where the students put their problems to Prof Malik. The students put up many questions regarding conflicts during adolescence and all of them were answered satisfactorily.

 

3rd Session- 19 July 2007 (12:30 to 1:30 pm)

 

Group Captain Dr. B. N. Das, Senior Medical Officer, AFS, Jodhpur, was invited to talk to the students about issues like- sexual changes during puberty, behavioral stress and storm during adolescence, drug abuse among the adolescents, necessity of abstinence and need of high moral values among the adolescents. He encouraged the students to open up and come forward with their mental conflicts. He also focused on the need of proper guidance during adolescence, developing strong will power, not to give up in peer pressure and to develop the ability to say ‘No’ when you want to say ‘No’. He also interacted with the students and satisfied their queries. Many students came up with problems that appeared very unimportant, but troubled the students deeply. The students were also guided towards building high self-esteem. This session was very useful for the students.

 
4th Session- 29 September 2007 (8-9.30 am)

Prof. A.K.Malik, HOD, Deptt. Of Psychology, Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur, was invited to address the students. He dealt with the issues lof making chi\oices in life. He stressed on the need of ‘Learning to say know’ in life. He said that it is necessary for the children to know the tactics of dealing with pressures of various types- peer pressure, pressure of studies, pressure of career selection, pressure of relationships, etc. He also focused on stress management in today’s stressful life-style. The POWER model for problem solving was also discussed with real life examples.

 

NAEP- CCA Activities 2007-08

 
During regular CCA activities, issues related to adolescence problems and life-skills were regularly inculcated in various competitions. The following activities were conducted:
  1. Extempore Speech- The school conducted extempore speech competition during the month of September. Through the programme the students were given a platform to show their out-of-the-box thinking. They also got an opportunity to express their feeling freely. The topics covered were: believe in yourself, saying no politely, if I were forced to smoke, selfishness financing drugs, negative aspects of the media, lost values. The programme was given a touch of excitement and vigour by involvement of students who served the role of spectators during the programme. All through the programme the teacher extended a helping hand and supported the students wholeheartedly. The judges also gave valuable tips on how to improve our skills in the art of extempore speech. By the end of the programme we were acquainted with various aspects related to growth and development of adolescents.
  2. Recitation Competition: Recitation Competition was bilingual- in Hindi and in English. The topics covered were- social evils, gender disparity, female foeticide, peer pressure, etc. The students selected the poems themselves and the session was very thought evoking. The judges were very much impressed by the mature selection of the content by the students.
  3. Slogan Writing Competition: This is the activity liked by most of the students. The students’ minds are always fertile with many witty slogans and when they get a channel to express it, their creativity flows freely. The slogans were written on social causes, social awareness, consumer awareness, etc.
  4. Quiz Competition: The students have been supplied with the literature related to substance abuse and HIV & AIDS. A quiz is scheduled to be conducted in the month of November (1st week). Questions related to substance abuse and HIV & AIDS will be asked and the nodal teachers will clarify doubts of the students related to these topics.

Brainstorming Sessions: The nodal teachers conduct several brainstorming sessions during their arrangement periods. They deal with topics related to life-skills, problem solving skills, learning to say ‘No’, etc.
